Here is the 6th Edition of the independent mercenary list I have managed to gather. Use it to decide which mercs to develop and make independent for maximum profit or specific item collection.
(Independent mercs are those you choose to release (and lose) after they reach level 100 or above. They then send you gifts every 6 days but they request presents every day to keep friendship at 100. The responsible NPC is Fugger, near Columbus)

Reminder: the profession is NOT what he is actually doing at the moment but the profession written on the message when he sends you a gift.
